Before Anguilla developed its tourism economy, we mined salt for a living. The Old Salt Factory and Pumphouse at Sandy Ground (destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017) was the main processing plant for salt. The tour takes visitors to the former Pumphouse location and explains how the mining of the adjacent salt pond was carried out from both a mechanical and human viewpoint. Photos illustrate how salt was picked from the pond flats, carried and stored for exportation. Tours are given by appointment only.
